Followup: Mission: Unite Mater & Garama.

burnadette_dpdlThis is still not the FULL story, but it's as full as I think anyone really wants to know.
Followup re: Wednesday night's much-anticipated Mission: Unite Mater & Garama. See below for MOAR, for now, the main points are:
- Anne Rice now has a gorgeous binder of Garama's VC fanart, see above pic for proof (the guy in the gray hoodie is a new real-world VC friend of mine). Forgive me for not sounding more excited, the adrenaline rush during that delivery was intense, and I haven't completely recovered.

- Christopher Rice: eloquent, intensely handsome in IRL, masterful interviewer of his mother, just, WOW.
- We also met Becket! And showed him the artwork, too, and he was enthralled. He may be our champion in this story…
- In response to the above, Garama wrote on Tumblr: "oh my god You are a beautiful human being I’m getting teary, these emotions are too much to handle, uuuhughk..!"
I just hope this works. This info generated a ton of excited response on Tumblr. Maybe Anne will give in partly based on us begging for it now...
Like I told Garama privately, Lestat would want this, would want Garama to draw his stories… (of course Monsieur Le Rockstar would love ALL fanart of himself, but if I could only choose one to give him... Garama would be that one).
Longer answer: During the Q&A, someone asked her, “Would you like to see one of your books illustrated?”
Anne said, “Yes, I just haven’t found the right illustrator and publisher yet.”
So, I flailed my arms for the microphone, held up the binder full of Garama’s artwork, and said, “Anne, I have your illustrator, right here.” She seemed interested.
At the signing table, I handed her the binder and told her it was a gift to her, opened it, showed her the first few pages (will post it all in full here later), told her Happy belated-Birthday (her birthday was a few weeks ago). She looked at a few drawings, but she was also signing my Werewolf book, and trying to keep the line moving, so she didn’t really speak to me. But, VC fandom, SHE HAS THE BINDER, SHE POSSESSES THE BEST OF GARAMA’S VC FANART, and hopefully she’ll love it as much as everyone in the VC fandom does.
On our way out, we stumbled across Becket, and we showed him the artwork, flirting with him a little because he is FAR MORE ATTRACTIVE in person than in his pictures. He really LOVED it, looked at every page of the 18 pages. So he might be our champion in this pursuit.
Memorable quotes from the event:
1) Christopher went to some kind of horror novelist con in the deep south, and all the authors there had gruesome bloody horror novels. They told him, "Stephen King brought horror to the suburbs, we brought it to the GUTTER, where it BELONGS." And Christopher has now added: "Well, Anne Rice brought it to NORDSTROM."
2) Christopher said he remembered his mom's first piece of advice on writing: "Write the book you would want to read."
3) THERE SHALL BE NO MAN-WOLF/VAMPIRE/WITCH CROSSOVER: Anne said, "I've written 3 of what I call "hybrid" novels, in which the Mayfair & vampire universes collided. Some time has passed now, and I don't think those novels were completely successful, I don't think they've worn well."
4) THERE SHALL BE NO BLOOD VIVICANTI/VC CROSSOVER: Anne said she can't collaborate with anyone, she ends up wanting to take control, has tried collaborating 2-3 times, it just doesn't work. Similarly, she doesn't plan on collaborating on a novel with Christopher, unless it's some kind of one-upmanship in which she writes a chapter, and then he writes one, attempting for it to be better, and then she writes the next, competitively.
5) Someone asked Anne if she would ever write about aliens. Christopher said, "I told my mother a long time ago, that she's got vampires, ghosts, mummies, werewolves, etc... I GET ALIENS. ALIENS ARE MINE." So she has to get his permission if she wants to write aliens.
Final word: Mission to unite Anne Rice & Garama is partially accomplished, or at least, the best I could do.
